VernalĀ is situated in northeastern Utah, about 175 miles east of Salt Lake City and 20 miles from the Colorado border.

The city is located in the Uintah Basin, encircled by the east-west running Uinta Mountains to the north, the Tavaputs Plateau to the south, and Blue Mountain to the east, residing in the Ashley Valley.
