About Bryce Canyon City, Utah
Bryce Canyon City is a municipality in Garfield County, Utah, located right next to Bryce Canyon National Park. Initially known as Ruby’s Inn, the town was officially established on July 23, 2007, due to a temporary state law and had a population of 198 according to the 2010 census.
Situated about 20 miles east of Panguitch and just outside the Bryce Canyon National Park’s northwest entrance, Bryce Canyon City is approximately 2.5 miles north of the park’s visitor center. It is positioned along Utah State Route 63 and extends to the northern end of Route 63 near Utah State Route 12, close to the park’s well-known Sunset Point. The area experiences relatively mild temperature variations throughout the year with sufficient rainfall.
The town’s origin dates back to 1916 when Reuben C. “Ruby” Syrett established a lodge and cabins, coinciding with the early promotion of Bryce Canyon as a tourist destination. As the national park gained popularity, especially after its designation in 1928, Ruby’s Inn evolved into a pivotal stop offering various services for travelers, eventually forming a small community. Syrett contributed to the town’s development by donating land for a state road, now known as Utah State Route 63, ensuring Ruby’s Inn was conveniently located at the park’s entrance.
